6 Lessons Kids Can Learn on the Playground

Think that lessons can't be learned on the playground? Think again. Sure, the academic stuff are picked up inside the classroom, but if you want the kids to learn some valuable life lessons while having fun at the same time, let them spend time on the playground.

Below are just some of the many lessons that children can learn while playing:

Safety

The playground has a lot outdoor equipment, and while they're generally considered safe, injuries can still occur. When on the playground, teach your kids lessons in safety by telling them to always hold while on the swing and not to scramble too fast while climbing up the slide or monkey bars. You may also want to inspect the equipment yourself before allowing your kids to play. If you see something faulty, point this out to your children and let them know why you can't allow them on the particular equipment.

Patience

Playgrounds can get pretty crowded at times, so children will sometimes have to wait their turn. This is a great learning opportunity that will allow kids to pick up the value of patience. For instance, waiting for the swings to free up will teach your kids that they can't always be first and that they need to wait their turn to let others have their fun.

Discipline

Another lesson that goes hand in hand with patience is discipline. When kids get restless, they may resort to shouting or cutting in line. Be sure to stop them when this happens and teach them the lesson of discipline and self-control. Make them see that being disciplined is a rewarding trait and will make the rest of the playground a more peaceful and fun place.

Preparedness

A lot of unexpected situations can arise on the playground, which is why it's best to be prepared. Did someone bruise their knee? A first-aid can fix that. Did your child get dirt on his shirt? Good thing you have a change of clothes in the car. Always have some "just in case" items in handy when on the playground and instill that lesson to your kids so that they'll learn to be prepared themselves.

Sharing

Sometimes, there's only a limited number of swings or there may not be enough shovels and pails in the sandbox. Take situations like these as opportunities to teach your kids the value of sharing. Encourage them to lend their toys or "space" on the playground with other kids. Let them see the benefits of taking turns and allow them to realize that sharing can actually be more fun.

Making Friends

Is your kid a little shy? Bring them to the playground and teach them how to approach other kids and make friends. Interacting with other children on the playground can really help build up guts and social skills so always encourage them to play with others. See if you can get other moms and dads in it as well. Who knows? Maybe in the process, you will get to meet great families too.
