Snow days have the ability to light up children's eyes because they usually mean one thing: school's out. Kids love snow days because they'll get an entire day to just play games and have fun.
If you're a parent though, this may not necessarily spell good news because it would mean that you child would miss another valuable day at school. If you're in this particular situation, don't fret. There are tons of snowy day fun and educational activities that your kids can get into to make sure that the cancelled school day wouldn't be an educational waste. They'll be happy because they got to have a fun day off from school, and as a parent, you'll be happy because the snow day doubled as a learning experience as well.
Check out the following activities below that can get your kids having fun and learning at the same time:
Have a learning show marathon
Let your kids spend some time watching their favorite educational shows. Shows such as Sesame Street, Super Why, Word Girl, and more are examples of TV entertainment that are fun and educational at the same time. Consider joining your kids with a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa in hand and turn your TV-watching activity into a fun and educational bonding experience all at the same time.
Collect snowflakes
Want to get out there and take advantage of the snow? Then put on your warm clothes, check the forecasts to see if it's safe, and if all is clear, step out there and have fun. Be sure to collect snowflakes while you're at it.
Once you've collected some snowflakes take out a microscope (or magnifying glass) and put each flake under the lens. Let your kids examine the magnified snowflakes and ask them what they see. Encourage them to be creative and name any interesting shapes or patterns that they can associate. You can even ask them to draw the shapes or patterns that they see. This is a wonderful exercise in creativity and can really get your children's artsy juices flowing.
Head to the kitchen
Remember that lessons aren't just picked up in the classroomâ€"there's plenty of learning to be had in the kitchen as well! If your kids are old enough, why not take the snow day as an opportunity to spend a warm day in the kitchen? Teach them how to bake or how to cook up some nice warm dishes. Not only will they pick up some new skills, but they'll certainly enjoy devouring their creations!
Board Games
Never underestimate the power of board games (especially the classic ones)! Depending on how old your kids are, bring out some fun yet educational board games that you have at home. These games may be simple (read: low tech) but they can spell hours of fun for you and the children! Want to step it up a notch? Take out a jigsaw puzzle that you and your kids can put together!
